USA Fishing received this email from a reader who was fishing with the Miss Anita:
Just wanted to drop a note confirming the solid salmon action out of Bodega Bay. I had the opportunity to join Ed and Vince on the Miss Anita on Saturday. We had a full load of six customers and high hopes of hooking into a salmon after a several year hiatus. We departed at 6:30AM and conditions were fairly bumpy although no one got sick. We dropped in lines around the 50 fathom curve straight out from the harbor. The boat is equipped with electric downriggers, so we were able to use lighter outfits and stack herring straight baits at varying levels. Very soon after dropping in the bites started coming in gangs of 2 or 3. Almost all of the fish were cookie cutter 8-12 pounders with a few shakers mixed in. At one point we had 5 rods go "bendo" in rapid succession and all hell broke loose! When it was over, we managed to land 4 out of the 5 thanks to some excellent teamwork and netting by Capt. Vince. Throughout the morning we worked a short range up and down the 50 fathom curve before the bite seemed to die around 11:30AM. We fished hard to try to get our final fish, but it wasn't meant to be after several missed opportunities. I was fortunate to have a nice limit to about 12 lbs. Around 2:15PM, we broke away to pull crab pots for full limits of dungies for all customers. May I say that Ed and Vince are running a top notch operation on the Miss Anita and I would recommend them to anyone interested in hooking into a salmon or any other trips they offer. The service was excellent and the fish was bled, gutted and gilled promptly and iced down for the trip back to port. I must admit that I had mixed feelings being out there harvesting a few salmon with current concern over sustainability of our Sacramento-run fish. Perhaps this one month season as it currently stands will have the effect of renewing our collective resolve to continue the battle over water rights and ensure the future of this and other gamefish. Of note, Fish and Game was at the docks dilligently taking samples of our catch. Hopefully this information will confirm that Sacramento stocks are truly on the rise as predicted by jack salmon estimates. I sure hope we get it right for our kid’s sake.
Tight lines,
